As of January 3, I have joined ByWater Solutions as their Lead Support Specialist. From the press release:

ByWater Solutions, an open source community supporter and official Koha support company is proud to welcome Jared Camins-Esakov as their Lead Support Specialist. Jared will be overseeing the support department for ByWater Solutions and will be in charge of the delegation and escalation of customer support issues. He is an active participant in the Koha community and has had extensive experience with troubleshooting and problem resolution for the Koha ILS.

I am pleased to announce the official launch of my new business, C & P Bibliography Services, LLC. C & P Bibliography Services, LLC offers library-quality bibliography services and bibliographic tools to private book collectors. We work with each of our clients to develop a custom bibliographic solution, freeing the collector from the tyranny of the collection and offering the peace-of-mind that comes with control over one’s possessions. Many of the services that I previously offered in a freelance capacity will now be offered through C & P.

Brooklyn College Library internship reflection

This past week I completed an internship in the Information Services department at the Brooklyn College Library. I worked on a number of projects, but the two main ones were a Russian-language instructional video for ESL students and a poster on copyright for a poster session associated with Brooklyn College Faculty Day, an interdisciplinary conference for faculty and staff at Brooklyn College.

Talk at Exeter College

At 5:30pm on Thursday, November 6 I will be giving a talk at Exeter College entitled “A librarian in Afghanistan: black tie and combat boots” on my experiences as a librarian in Afghanistan.

The talk will be held in the Rector’s Upstairs Drawing Room at Exeter College on Turl Street. All are welcome and there is no need to RSVP.

At 10am on Wednesday, November 5, I will be giving a talk entitled “Lessons from Afghanistan: what the Bodleian can learn from Afghan libraries” about some of the problems faced by libraries in Afghanistan.

The talk will be in the Seminar Room (Room 132) in the New Bodleian on Parks Road. All members of the Oxford University are welcome, but please RSVP, as visitors to the Bodleian require require an escort.

At 11:30am on Thursday, April 17 I will be giving a talk at TCNJ in Professor Jo-Ann Gross’s Modern Middle East class entitled “On the Edge of Sanity: three months as a librarian in Kabul” on my experiences as a librarian in Afghanistan.

Accomplishments

Transferred pre-1800 oversize books from the Firestone stacks to the Rare Books ReCAP facility (382 volumes, of which 104 required custom boxes).
Prepared 23 personal name authority records in OCLC Connexion Client.
Completed cataloguing of 14 books, including 6 Arabic books from the William H. Shehadi collection of Kahlil Gibran.
Drafted New and Notable entries for around forty interesting acquisitions from FY07, to be published in the Princeton University Library Chronicle.
Worked through some 12cm of the Association File card catalogue, covering names from V-Wigner.
Led a team of three students on the following projects
- Transferred 29 collections of Latin American ephemera to the Rare Books ReCAP facility (77 cartons of material requiring a total of 162 archival boxes).
- Continued work on the ongoing project to transfer Princeton’s holdings of Native American periodicals to the Rare Books ReCAP facility (this summer we processed 19 new titles, comprising 36 archival boxes, and shipped additional boxes from another 5 titles that had already been processed).
- Transferred a collection of ephemera relating to the Spanish Civil War (Spanish Transitions Supplement 1) to the Rare Books ReCAP facility (13 archival boxes).
- Transferred tapes of the New York radio show Free Voice of Greece to the Rare Books ReCAP facility (28 archival boxes).
- Transferred 9 serial titles from the Nancy Crawshaw collection to the Rare Books ReCAP facility (18 archival boxes).
- Transferred the Diamantides Collection on Aristides Phoutrides to the Rare Books ReCAP facility (6 archival boxes).

Reviewed more than 700 leaves worth of letters between Charles Williams and ‘Celia’ in preparation for de-restricting the collection
Analyzed two recently-donated small collections in order to make a recommendation on how they should be handled
Delivered two talks, one as an unofficial staff development seminar, the other as outreach to the Exeter College community
